Event Description
This unique SPGH event, co-sponsored by Georgetown University’s Modern Greek Studies Program, showcases, in the form of a live concert, the living tradition of two millennia of Greek music in the songs of Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis. The songs will be performed by the Greek Music Ensemble, a Boston-based group committed to the critical interpretation and high-quality performance of contemporary Greek music, under the direction of Panagiotis Liaropoulos of the Berklee College of Music. The goal of the Ensemble is to redefine the performance standards of Greek music such as to expose its stylistic nuances and authentic spirit without excess orchestration or sentimentalism. Drawing on Byzantine hymns, demotic songs, and rembetika, and marrying this musical heritage with that of the great heritage of Greek poetry, Theodorakis and Hadjidakis created the genre of “Greek Art Popular Song” that sang the trials, but also hopes, aspirations and sensibilities of the Greek people during the Second World War. Originating in the depths of history and expressing authentic feelings and experiences, these songs achieved international acclaim and became treasures of the world. In its 44th year of existence, SPGH has always been concerned with critical living aspects of Greek Heritage and the importance of this heritage beyond the narrow Greek audiences. The concert of the Greek Music Ensemble is a prime example of this commitment.
